Swiss-Type Turning Machine Performance: It’s all in the Details

Attention to detail is often what separates exceptional products from those that are simply “good enough.” This is particularly true of machine tools. The more precisely crafted and robust a machine’s components and assembly, the better it will perform initially and in the long run – without requiring undue service.

Nomura DS Swiss-style turning machines are designed and built with the philosophy that “good enough” is never good enough. One example is the painstaking process Nomura DS uses to insure a smooth and flat guiding surface. Why is flatness so important? Because unevenness between two surfaces increases stress on the guide ways. Initially this increases the possibility of vibrations affecting the cutting zone. Over time, this stress will erode the machine’s stability and, therefore, its precision and longevity.

Only Nomura DS employs a 200-year-old hand scraping technique that produces an ultra-precise surface with sub-micron unevenness of less than 0.0001 mm. This process, called Kisage, takes 10 years of practice for a technician to perfect the skill. The Kisage expert uses a variety of hand tools to for rough, moderate and fine finishing, taking a full day to achieve the desired flatness.
