Swiss Machine Tool Pre-setter Reduces Adjustment/ Replacement Times by 60%

How to Recover from a Tool Change Interruption on an Okuma Mill

If the automatic tool changer on your Okuma vertical or horizontal milling machine suddenly stops in the middle of changing a tool, there’s a quick and easy way to solve the problem.

A new simple to install and operate CNC loading and unloading platform is an affordable way for CNC shops to increase productivity.

Gosiger now sells and supports a new CNC machine tending platform that enables any size shop to add robotic part loading and unloading to their production process. The result is lower cost-per-part and increased productivity.

Load & Go requires no advanced programming skills, using an intuitive, menu-driven HMI to make setups and 10-minute-or-less changeovers quick and easy.

Because it’s a compact, self-contained unit, installation is as simple as placing Load & Go in front of the CNC machine, anchoring it to the floor and connecting air, power and Ethernet service. The touch screen HMI takes you through the setup process, and a video installation and operation guide walks users through each process.

Vacuum Parts Washer Replaces 3 Cleaning Stations, Improves Quality Control & Provides Safer Workplace

Plant Manager Steve Masters oversees an 86,000 square foot facility with over 100 machine tools that perform precision manufacturing of parts for aerospace, medical, power distribution and automotive industries.

Located in Round Pond, Maine, Masters Machine Company may be more than 60 years old, but it prides itself on continuously investigating and integrating new technologies that will improve performance and productivity.

Mr. Masters is part of an internal group that identifies and prioritizes capital investment targets. “We don’t just replace or add machine tools, we also look at all phases of our processes to find opportunities for improvement.”

One of these areas is the often overlooked task of cleaning parts after machining. Masters Machine is AS9100, ISO-9100 and ITAR registered, and many of the parts the company makes require critical inspection using CMMs, vision systems and optical comparators. “We make some parts that have a number of complex features, such as large braking components for busses with several ports and blind holes that must be thoroughly cleaned before inspecting.

We wanted a single system that would replace our three parts cleaning stations, require less labor, and clean parts more completely. After looking at several options, Gosiger High Volume introduced us to the iFP Kleen Power vacuum cleaning system. It checked all of the boxes, including keeping the workplace safe from cleaning solvent vapors.”

The iFP system provides safe, solvent-based cleaning for complex parts with such features as ID threads, blind holes and cross holes that aqueous-based cleaners can’t thoroughly clean. The programmable system cleans parts in a sealed chamber using hydrocarbons or modified alcohol-based solutions. These cleaning agents are internally recycled through a distillation process that protects the workplace environment and reduces costs by recapturing and reusing the solutions.

To accommodate a wide variety of parts, the system can combine spraying, immersion, submerged jets, ultrasonic and vapor cleaning options either statically or by adding oscillation and/or rotation. Once the user establishes a cleaning regimen, the program is stored and can be easily recalled as needed.

“We’ve had the iFP system in operation for two years and couldn’t be more pleased. It achieved all of our goals. We seriously considered some competitive products, but Gosiger had such in-depth knowledge, understanding of our requirements and experienced technical staff that it made the decision much easier. We had worked with Gosiger before and we knew we could trust them to give us the support we wanted.”

Automation & Industry 4.0 at IMTS 2018

A universal goal of the more than 130,000 visitors to IMTS 2018 (September 10 – 15) was improving the performance of their manufacturing operations. Much of what they saw had a common theme: The continuing evolution from focusing on discrete machines to bringing together various manufacturing technologies, such as traditional subtractive, laser, additive and digital connectivity.

This is, of course, an important component of Industry 4.0 that seeks to integrate automation solutions to make possible unattended and lights-out production that reduce cost-per-part and material waste while allowing better use of machine operator time.

Examples of this concept abounded, including the Okuma Laser EX series multi-tasking machines that incorporate laser metal deposition (LMD) technology for additive, as well as 5-axis subtractive manufacturing.

This unique approach enables a CNC shop to use 5-axis machining on a complex workpiece and then create additional features using additive deposition to combine different metals such as Inconel that is 3-D printed onto a stainless-steel base. In addition, a Laser EX machine can perform grinding, heat-treating and coating using the high-output, stable laser.

Another illustration is the use of an Ethernet communications system, to bilaterally share information between an automatic bar feeder and a CNC machine tool’s master production schedule for on-the-fly, unassisted changeovers, monitoring of material usage to minimize waste, and enabling of lights-out production.

New High Velocity HMC Reduces Processing Time by up to 60%

Manufacturing structural components for aerospace applications presents a number of challenges including holding tight tolerances and working with difficult-to-machine materials. The Modig HHV series universal horizontal machining centers are specifically designed to machine bar and extrusion components for aerospace and other industries with faster cycle times and fewer changeovers.

The Modig HHV-2, for example, accommodates aluminum and carbon fiber parts up to 60 feet long and reduces cycle times by 40% to 60% compared to standard machining centers. A patented rotary chuck design controls the reference jaw through the CNC control, making it possible to clamp surfaces to a new position or already pre-joggled parts. Feed rates are 0 – 60 meters per minute. Typical parts are longerons, stringers, floor beams, seat tracks and small detail parts such as clips and brackets.

5 Tips for Building a Spare Parts Inventory & Why You Need One

Nothing is more frustrating than a CNC machine breakdown. Except waiting for the repair parts to arrive. That’s why the Gosiger Parts Department provides 24/7/365 access to its own $10,000,000 spare parts inventory and $40,000,000 of additional inventory from their OEM partners.

However, a CNC shop can often get back up and running even faster if it has an inventory of critical spare parts on hand. Naturally, you don’t want to tie up dollars unnecessarily, but it makes good sense to have a well thought out list of replacement parts in your facility. So how do you determine which parts to stock? Here are a few guidelines:

1. Start by looking over the maintenance/technical manuals for each machine. That’s where you can identify the items you most often need to replace. Typical maintenance items include batteries, filters, way wipers, coolant pins and other consumables.

Set up an inventory control system. List the part identification numbers by machine model and set a baseline quantity to keep on hand. When routine maintenance depletes the quantity of a part to its baseline, it’s time to reorder.

In addition to basic replacement parts, you may want to keep a supply of small items such as electrical switches on hand. Depending on the type of machine, it may also be a good idea to keep certain other electrical or mechanical parts in stock.

Although stocking such major replacement components as drives, encoders, ball screws, tool changer assemblies or attachment heads is usually not necessary, if you have a CNC machine that you simply can’t afford to be without, you may wish to add such items to your inventory.
